In order for an individual to work as a nursing aide in California, he must get certified by the state’s Aide and Technician Certification Section. There are two ways to get a CNA certification in this state: you can pass the NNAAP exam or apply for reciprocity.
Those who have never been certified as nursing aides before can only get certified by passing the NNAAP exam. This exam consists of a written/oral test and a practical skills test that is given on the same day. Aspiring candidates will only get certified if they are able to pass both tests.
Before you can take the NNAAP exam, you must first complete a state-approved CNA training program. A training program will provide you with the knowledge and skills needed to pass all the tests and become a competent nursing aide. Training consists of 50 hours of lectures and 100 hours of clinical practice. Students will learn the basic nursing procedures and skills, as well as different concepts like infection control, medical terminologies, human anatomy, nutrition, vital signs, roles and responsibilities, and patients’ rights and independence.
Those who took up units on the Fundamentals of Nursing like RNs, LPNs, and nursing students and graduates can also apply for the NNAAP exam if they wish to become nursing aides. When applying, they will be required to provide proof of training and education.
The process of reciprocity is only offered to individuals who are already certified as nursing aides in other states. To be eligible for reciprocity, applicants must have a current certification and a good relationship with their state. Applicants through this process are still required to get fingerprinted and pass the national background checks.
CNA certifications are only valid for 2 years and must be renewed before they expire. A nurse aide with an expired certification will not be allowed to continue working in a state-certified nursing facility. Certified nursing aides are required to work for at least 8 hours and complete 48 hours of in-service/CE to be eligible for renewal. The following forms will be necessary for the renewal process:
