California is one of the best places to train and become a nursing assistant. The weather is great and there are a number of training programs that you can choose from. Due to the shortage of nursing assistants in the state, healthcare providers such as hospitals, nursing homes, rehabilitative centers, assisted living centers, and long-term care facilities are now offering nursing assistant training.
All training programs are required to be certified by the CDPH before accepting any students. You must only enroll in a program that is approved by the CDPH to assure that your training will meet the federal and state’s standards. Completing an approved training program will also make you eligible to apply for the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program exam, which is the final step in becoming a certified nursing assistant.
CNA training programs in California are required to offer 150 hours of training. This is longer than what most states require from their training programs. The training hours are divided into both (50 hours) classroom instructions and (100 hours) clinical training practice. Since you are still in training, you will not be allowed to perform any procedure that has not yet been taken-up in class.
The NNAAP exam was designed to measure the competency of aspiring nursing assistants in terms of knowledge and skills. The exam is divided into a multiple-choice written/oral test and a clinical skills evaluation. Candidates must pass both parts of the exam to get certified. According to the law, only certified nursing assistants can work in a CDPH-approved health care facility.
This exam is not limited to only those who completed a CNA training program. Nursing students/graduates, registered nurses, licensed vocational nurses, and medics who wish to become nursing assistants can contact the CDPH at (916) 327-2445 to determine if they are eligible to challenge the NNAAP exam.
CNA certifications in California are only valid for 24 months. Nursing assistants must renew their certification before it expires. An expired certificate can no longer be renewed, but can be reactivated by challenging a competency evaluation exam within 2 years after the certification’s expiration. To be eligible for renewal you must provide proof of employment for at least 8 hours and completion of 48 hours of in-service training/continuing education.
