The main goal in becoming a nurse aide is to get certified. The first step in becoming a nurse aide is to enroll in a training program. Training can take anywhere from a month up to half a year depending on the training program you enroll in. After you complete your training, you will become eligible to apply for the certification exam. Different training institutions have different requirements but a few general requirements to become a nurse aide student include the following:
• Minimum Age – The state requires all aspiring nurse aide candidates to be at least 18 years old to enroll in a program and to receive a CNA certification.
• High School Diploma – Every candidate must at least be a high school graduate. This will demonstrate that the candidate has a fundamental knowledge and understanding of Basic English. This will also show that the candidate is able to properly read and write.
• Background Checks – Candidates are required to be fingerprinted and undergo the criminal background checks through the Live Scan Services. Candidates must not have any records of abuse, theft, drug abuse, or other records that might prevent them from getting certified.
• Immunization – Since candidates work very closely with the patients, all candidates must have completed immunizations to protect themselves from any disease conditions. This also goes the same when it comes to the interest of the patients. Candidate must be free of any communicable diseases such as tuberculosis.
After your training, the next step is to complete your application packet and send it to the nearest Regional Testing Center. You can get an application form from your instructor or from www.pearsonvue.com. Pearson VUE has been authorized to assist in conducting the exam at approved Regional Testing Centers. The exam consists of a written/oral exam and a random skills evaluation. If you wish to know the coverage of the exam, you can download the Candidate Handbook from the link provided.
CNA certifications in California are issued by the Aide and Technician Certification Section of the L&C Program of the CDPH. You will only get certified if you pass all the tests of the certification exam. Employers will only hire those who are certified by the ATCS. If you wish to verify your own certification or another nurse aide’s, you can visit this link: http://www.apps.cdph.ca.gov/cvl/SearchPage.aspx
