To become a nursing assistant in California, you must complete a state-approved training program and challenge the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program exam. If you meet these two requirements, your name will be added to the state’s Nurse Aide Registry (NAR). Employers will only hire nursing assistants whose names are on the NAR.
State-approved training programs are located throughout the California. The state’s Department of Public Health is responsible for certifying and monitoring all programs in the state. You must only enroll in a program that is approved by them to become eligible to apply for the NNAAP exam after your training.
CDPH-approved programs will teach you the different skills that you will use to take care of the patients when you become a CNA. These programs take 150 hours to complete and consist of classroom instructions and practical training. You will learn about different topics like infection control, mental health, nutrition, vital signs, proper documentation, and many more.
Once you are through with your training, the next step is to apply for and challenge the NNAAP exam. The state has authorized Pearson VUE to assist in conducting, scoring, and releasing the exam results. The exam consists of a multiple-choice knowledge test and a practical skills test. You must pass both parts of the exam to get certified by the Aide and Technician Certification Section.
Each candidate is only given 3 attempts to pass all the tests. These attempts are only valid within 2 years after completing your training. If you fail for the 3rd time you will be required to retrain before you can reapply once more.
The results are normally released on the same day. If there are any technical problems, the results will be mailed to you within one week after the exam date. If you pass all the tests, you can expect your CNA certificate to arrive within 10 days after passing.
Your name on the NAR will remain there for 24 months. You are eligible to work as a nursing assistant so long as your name is on the Registry. To keep your name on the Registry you must renew your certification every 24 months. You will need to complete 2 forms in order to do this. The forms will contain instructions on what to do.
