If you are looking for a way to start a career in health, then you should think about becoming a nursing aide. Compared to other career option, following this route is very practical and quick. All you have to do is to follow a few simple steps.
STEP ONE
You must first receive the necessary training and education by enrolling in a CNA training program. The program must be approved by the California Department of Public Health. Because of the demand for nursing aides, you can find NATPs to be offered by community colleges, nursing homes, hospitals, and several other educational facilities. If you have some financial troubles, there are several programs that you can take for free or cheaply such as the one offered by the American Red Cross.
STEP TWO
Once you complete your training, the next step is to apply for the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program or NNAAP examination. To apply, you can either complete this application form (http://www.asisvcs.com/publications/pdf/070508.pdf) and mail it to the address provided or go to www.pearsonvue.com and apply online.
Please remember that all payments are non-refundable. If you apply through the mail, your payment must be in the form of a money order, cashier’s check, or company check. If you are applying online, you can use your credit or debit card. Personal checks and cash are not accepted. Please make sure that you send all requirements. Incomplete applications will not be processed.
STEP THREE
The NNAAP exam consists of a written/oral exam and a skills evaluation. Both of these tests are given on the same day. To be certified, you must pass both of them. You will only have three attempts to pass. If you fail after the third attempt you must undergo retraining.
On the day of the exam, please arrive at least 15 minutes before the start of the exam. You must also bring two valid IDs for the pre-exam check-in. Latecomers are not permitted to enter the exam area once the test has started and they will not receive any refunds.
STEP FOUR
Once you pass all of the tests, the Aide and Technician Certification Section will send you your certificate within 10 business days after you pass. It will be your responsibility to keep your certificate valid by renewing it every 2 years. To be eligible, you will have to provide proof of employment and completion of 48 hours of in-service or continuing education.
If you wish to check your status, you can go online at http://www.apps.cdph.ca.gov/cvl/SearchPage.aspx or call ATCS automated response number at (916) 327-2445.
