To become a certified nurse aide in California you must complete a CDPH-approved CNA training program and pass both the written and skills evaluation exam of the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program exam.

The NNAAP exam can only be taken by those who received CNA training or similar training in another program. If you completed a similar program such as a nursing education program and want to become a nurse aide, you have to call the CDPH at (916) 327-2445 to establish eligibility. If you are deemed eligible, you will no longer be required to undergo further training to be able to challenge the NNAAP exam.

There are some training programs, such as those offered by a nursing home, which allows their students to already start working in their institution. These students are given only 120 days from the start of their work, to get certified. While they are still in training, they are not allowed to perform any procedure that has not yet been taught in the classroom.  The state only allows this arrangement if the hiring institution accepts being liable for the action of its students.

If you did not enroll in a facility-based program, you are given 3 attempts to pass the NNAAP exam within 2 years after completing your training. If you fail after the 3rd attempt or fail to pass within the 2-year period, you will be required to complete another 150-hour CNA program.

The state of California accepts reciprocity from other states. The process of reciprocity will allow certified nurse aides from other states to transfer and work in California. To be eligible the applicant must have a current certification and a clean background record. He or she must not be listed on the Abuse Registry.
