A CNA certification is a requirement to work as a long-term nurse aide in Pennsylvania. An applicant can only get certified if he or she is at least 16 years old and is listed on the state’s Nurse Aide Registry. Getting on the registry will mean that you must complete a training class, clear the criminal background checks, and pass the state license exams for nurse aides.
Criminal Background Checks
The checks are done at federal and state levels. Nobody is allowed to enroll in a state-approved CNA program without passing the checks. Applicants need to pay $10 for the state-level checks and $28.75 for the FBI checks. In-state residents are allowed to temporarily work as non-certified nurse aides for up to 30 days while waiting. Out-of-state residents are given a maximum of 90 days.
CNA Training Programs
The required training for aspiring nurse aides are offered through different entities across the state such as community colleges, nursing homes, hospitals, and other healthcare facilities. Aside from being at least 16 years old to enter, applicants must also be in top physical and mental health. They need to have all their necessary immunizations and be free of any communicable diseases. Some training facilities may require applicants to have a high school diploma or a GED.
When enrolled, students will spend 42.5 hours in the classroom for theoretical coursework and 37.5 hours in the clinical area for their supervised clinical training. While they are in the clinical area, they will be supervised by a nursing aide instructor at all times. No student is allowed to perform any procedure without the presence of their instructor.
Training Exemptions
No further training is required for nursing graduates and students who can show proof of their education and training on the Fundamentals of Nursing. They can apply for the CNA exams by submitting the forms along with an authorization to test, which they can get through the Department of Education. These individuals are only given one (1) attempt to pass. If they fail, they will have to complete a course before they can retake the exams.
CNA License Exams
The license exams are scheduled and conducted by the American Red Cross. The ARC has asked Pearson VUE to help score the exams. The license exams consist of a written/oral exam and a manual skills demonstration. Applicants must pass both tests to gain entry into the state’s Nurse Aide Registry. Applicants who are unsure of which type of knowledge test to take can try the Self-Assessment Reading Test at: http://www.portal.state.pa.us/portal/server.pt/community/nurse_aide_registry/14154/nurse_aide_self_assessment_reading_test/558493 Those who pass both exams are included on the nurse aide registry for 24 months. You can find the closest testing facility by calling the American Red Cross at 1-800-795-2350.
Reimbursement
An applicant who is currently employed in a health care facility or has received an offer of employment prior to enrolling in a training program may not pay for the training and testing fees. All payments must be charged to the employer. For those who were not working at the time they enrolled can still get reimbursed if they find work within 12 months after they get certified.
