Challenging the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program examination or the NNAAP exam is a necessary step in becoming a nursing aide. If an aspiring nursing aide candidate passes all the tests, he or she will get certified. According to the law, a person can only work as a nursing aide in a certified health care facility if he or she is certified.
All student nursing aides are required to complete a state-approved nurse aide training course in order to qualify for the exam. The California Department of Public Health is responsible for certifying training programs in the state. Approved programs are required to offer a minimum of 150 hours of training. Depending on the course you enroll in, it can take you 1 to 6 months to complete a training course.
The first part of the certification exam is the written exam. Candidates are given 2 hours to answer 70 multiple-choice questions. The questions are taken from a variety of topics that are required to be covered in the training courses. If a candidate has trouble reading English, he can request to take the oral exam instead. The same amount of time will be given to the candidates for them to answer the same number of questions. Keep in mind that there is an additional payment of $15 for those who wish to take the oral exam.
The second part of the NNAAP examination is the practical skills test. Candidates are asked to perform 5 different nursing procedures within 25 minutes. The first procedure is always proper hand washing. The remaining 4 are randomly selected from a given Skills List.
The state has authorized the Pearson VUE Testing Company to help in conducting the exam. If you visit their website at www.pearsonvue.com you can download a copy of the Candidate Handbook, which will give you more information regarding the NNAAP exam. You can also get a Sample Written Knowledge Test from their website.
Normally, the results of the NNAAP examinations are released on the same day. All the names of those who pass are forwarded to the Aide and Technician Certification Section. If you pass all the tests, you can expect your CNA certificate to arrive at your address within 10 business days after passing.
