California is one of the best places to start a career as a nurse aide. This occupation is very in demand and can receive high salaries when you include overtime. The annual salary of a California nurse aide is somewhere from $20,000 to $38,000 depending on the employer. With such high demands, a newly certified nurse aide will not have any problem looking for work.
You can only work in California as a nurse aide if you are certified. The Aide and Technician Certification Section of the L&C Program is responsible for certifying all nurse aides in the state. If you have never been certified before, then the only way for you to become a CNA is by passing the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program.
The NNAAP exam was developed to test the competency of an aspiring nurse aide in both skill and knowledge. It’s divided into a written/oral knowledge test and a clinical skills evaluation. Only those who pass all the two parts will get certified.
The state has authorized Pearson VUE to help schedule and conduct the exam at approved Regional Testing Centers. If you visit their website at www.pearsonvue.com you can get a sample knowledge test and a copy of the Candidate Handbook. The Handbook is the most detailed resource for the NNAAP exam.
To become eligible to take the exam, you must first complete a state-approved CNA training program. Programs in California take longer than most states. You will need to spend 150 hours in lectures and clinical practice to complete your training. Depending on the program you choose to enroll in, it can take you 2 to 6 months.
While enrolled in the program, all students are required to undergo the background checks for criminal records. The checks are done at both federal and state levels. No student is allowed to proceed to the clinical area without undergoing and passing the background checks.
Registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, and medics are also allowed to apply for the NNAAP exam. Since their training is similar to the ones offered in a CNA program, they will no longer be required to undergo additional training.
