There are several requirements of the state that must be complied with before you can be called a nursing assistant. One of the most important things is finishing a state-approved training program. The program should be approved by the GMCF. This is the private contractor authorized by the Department of Community Health to oversee all training programs as well as the competency exams. Most of the programs that are offered in this state can be completed within 6 months of continuous training.
For a program to be certified, it must offer at least 85 hours of training, where it includes 24 hours of clinical duties. All students enrolled in these programs should be able to complete the laboratory skills training, classroom lessons, and the clinical duties. Each clinical rotation should only be limited to no more than 14 students. When they are already in the clinical rotations, no student will be allowed to join the group.
If you are through with the training and education, all those skills and knowledge will then be put to the test during the CNA license exams. The exams will be composed of two parts, an oral/written exam and a skills evaluation. Every candidate must pass both parts to get their name entered in the registry.
