Now is one of the best times to start a job in health care. The demand for healthcare providers is constantly increasing, especially since the number of elderly in the population is also rising. Among the different healthcare providers, the nurse aide/nursing aide is one of the most in demand. Compared to the other courses, the time it takes to become a nursing aide is a lot quicker.
A nursing aide can be defined as a person who has been trained in the basic principles and skills of Nursing. They work under the supervision of licensed nurses and help them provide nursing and nursing-related care to patients in different health care facilities.
To help with the goal of the Nursing Home Reform Act, which is to provide patients with better quality care, all aspiring nursing aide candidates are required to undergo training in a state-approved Nurse Aide Training Program or NATP. Because of the demand for nursing aides, NATPs are now being offered by nursing homes, hospitals, government organizations, private sectors, vocational schools, and other institutions and schools.
Students will learn different concepts and skills that they will use when they take care of the patients as nursing aides. The NATPs’ curriculum comprises of classroom lessons and on-the-job practical training. Students are grouped and are handled by a qualified clinical instructor. Each group is only comprised of a maximum of 15 students to allow maximum learning potential.
After completing a training program the next step is to challenge the certification exam. This exam consists of a 70-item knowledge test and a practical skills test. Candidates who pass all the tests will receive a CNA certification from the Aide and Technician Certification Section. Not only will a certification show proof that you are a competent nursing aide, it will also make you eligible to work in a state-certified nursing home or health care facility.
Employers will verify your certification prior to hiring you by contacting the ATCS or by going online to http://www.apps.cdph.ca.gov/cvl/SearchPage.aspx. You can also use the link provided if you ever want to check your own status as a certified nurse aide.
