Reciprocity
This process is only for candidates who are already listed in another state’s NAR. If they wish to apply, they must send proof of their training, education, and proof of a valid CNA certification. To protect the patients, all applicants are also required to undergo and pass a criminal background check. All applications must be completely sent to:

Challenging the NNAAP exam
The takingof the NNAAP examination is the most common way to gain entry into the Nurse Aide Registry. It is divided into a multiple-choice knowledge test and a random clinical skills evaluation. Only individuals who have met the necessary training will qualify to take this exam. To get into the NAR, the candidate must pass all the tests. Each candidate is only given 3 attempts to pass. If he/she fails after the third attempt, he/she will have to complete another training program before being allowed to reapply.
You can qualify to apply for the NNAAP exams by:
• Completing a CDPH-certified NATP
• Getting Military-training as a medic or corpsman
• Enrolling or completing a nursing education program as a nursing student/graduate or as a licensed practical nurse.
Both of the exams are given on the same day at a regional testing center. If there are no technical problems, the results of both exams will be released on the same day. Please avoid arriving late. Latecomers will not be allowed to enter the testing area once the tests have started. Also remember to bring 2 government-issued valid IDs for the pre-exam check-in.
All the names of those who passed all the tests will be forwarded to the ATCS. If you are one of them, you can expect your certificate to arrive at your address within 10 business days after you passed. You will then use this certificate to prove that you are capable of working as a CNA for the next 2 years. If you wish to continue your eligibility to work, you must renew your certificate before it expires. An expired certificate cannot be renewed but can be reactivated by taking an evaluation exam. If your certificate has expired for more than 2 years, you must start all over again by undergoing retraining and retesting.
