The process of becoming a nurse aide can be quick and exciting. The first thing that you will need to do is to find a suitable training program to enroll in. Before you enroll, you must make sure that it is approved by the state’s Department of Public Health. When you enroll, you will be spending at least 150 hours in lectures and practical training. Most of the programs in the state can be completed within 4-6 months.
If you want to get ahead of the competition, you can also enroll in a home health aide program at the same time. Individuals who are taking both CNA and HHA training programs at the same time are allowed to enroll in a 40-hour HHA program. These hours are equally divided into lectures and clinical training. Those who are only planning to get an HHA certificate are required to complete a 120-hour program.
When you are through, the next step of the process is to apply for the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program exam. Since you completed an approved program, you are eligible to apply. Medics who were trained in the military may also apply by providing a copy of form DD-214 when they apply. RNs and LPNs who wish to work as nurse aides in California must also challenge the NNAAP exam before being allowed to work.
The NNAAP examination consists of a multiple-choice knowledge test and a skills evaluation. You will have the option to take either the written or oral version of the knowledge test. You will have 120 minutes to answer all 70 items in the knowledge test and 30 minutes to perform all required 5 nursing skills in the skills evaluation.
To get into the Nurse Aide Registry you must pass both the exams. If you fail, you will have to reapply and retake the test you failed. You will only have a maximum of 3 attempts. If you do pass, the ATCS will send you your certificate within 10 working days. Employers will only hire nurse aides who are certified and are listed in the NAR. They can check by simply going online at http://www.apps.cdph.ca.gov/cvl/SearchPage.aspx or by calling (916) 327-2445. You can also contact the ATCS if you wish to check your own status.
Names in the NAR are only valid for 2 years. To keep your eligibility to work as a nurse aide, you will have to renew it before it expires. An expired certificate cannot be renewed, but it can be reactivated by taking an evaluation exam. If your certificate has expired for more than 2 years, you will have to undergo retraining and retake the NNAAP exams to get back into the NAR.
