If you want to work as a nursing assistant, you will need to get certified. You can only become a CNA if your name is entered in the Nurse Aide Registry. The first step that you must take is to complete a training program. You must make sure that the program you enroll in is approved by the state’s DOH. Certified programs offer 75 hours of training, which is divided into lectures and at least 16 hours of clinical practice. To be enrolled in a program, you must be at least 18 years old, have a high school diploma or a GED, be physically and mentally healthy, have complete immunizations and a negative TB test result, and pass the criminal background check.
After your training, you will be ready to challenge the certification exam. This exam consists of a 75-item knowledge test and a practical skills test. To get certified, you must pass both exams. If you fail in one part, you must reapply and retake the test you failed. Every candidate is only given 3 attempts to pass. The certification exam in South Dakota is currently conducted by D&S Diversified Technologies, dba. As long as your name is listed on the NAR, you will be certified as a nursing assistant. Your name on the Registry will remain there for 24 months. If you want to keep your name on the NAR and your eligibility to work as a nursing assistant, you must renew your certification by going online at https://ifmc.sd.gov/
Passing the CNA license exams is the only way for you to be able to work legally in the state of South Dektao. If you, on the other hand, have received your training as a CNA in a different state, they you can apply for reciprocity to be able to work. When applying, your license must still be valid.
