The students’ time will be divided into classroom lectures on different nursing concepts like mental health, infection control, rehabilitation, communication techniques, and different medical terms. You will also be trained on nursing competency skills such as partial bed baths, assisting in feeding, dressing, ambulating, performing ROM exercises, and other daily activities of the patient/resident.

nurses-at-lunchIf you have not background experience in healthcare, the first step in your agenda is to enroll in a CNA training program. When selecting a program to enroll in, please make sure to enroll in a program that is approved by the state’s Department of Public Health. In addition programs need to be licensed by the (ATCS) The Aide and Technician Certification Section. This is the governing body that is in charge of certifying training programs. This will ensure that your training will meet the federal and state standards, as well as ensure that you will be able to apply for the certification exam afterwards.

You cannot work in this state if you do not have a nurse aide license and are listed in the registry with an active status. Training will include a curriculum to help you learn the basics of health care and provide you with real life hands-on practice using commonly used tasks and procedures. In addition you will need to pass the background checks done by both the federal and the state. You can get more information about requirements to become certified in CA by calling (916) 327-2445

Approved CNA training consists of 150 hours of both classroom instructions and supervised clinical practice. Both the clinical training and the classroom lectures are taken congruently. Every program is required to teach 16 modules that would cover important concepts such as infection control, vital signs, proper body mechanics, safety and emergency procedures, nutrition, roles and responsibilities, patients’ rights and independence, as well as other related concepts.

Most training programs can be completed in about 2 to 6 months of continuous training. As soon as you are through, you can then proceed and submit the CNA Initial Application form (http://www.asisvcs.com/publications/pdf/070503.pdf) to the CDPH to finalize your eligibility. Once you are deemed eligible, your next step is to submit the application forms (http://www.asisvcs.com/publications/pdf/070508.pdf) for the certification exam to your local Regional Testing Center.

Taking the certification exam is the final step in becoming a nursing aide. This exam consists of a multiple-choice knowledge test and a clinical skills exam. If you pass all the tests you will receive a CNA certification. Employers will only hire you as a nursing aide if you are certified by the state’s Aide and Technician Certification Section.

Employers are required to verify every applicant’s certification before hiring. If you wish to check your status as a certified nursing aide all you have to do is to visit http://www.apps.cdph.ca.gov/cvl/SearchPage.aspx and enter your name or certification number. You  can also call the ATCS at (916) 327-2445.
