The first step in becoming a nursing aide is to find CNA classes to enroll in. Courses must be pre-approved by the Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services and offer the minimum 90 hours of training. These programs are open to anyone who wants to have a career in the medical field as a nurse aide.
Instruction will provide you with the basic health care skills needed on the job. Some of the tasks you will practice are: transporting patients, infection control, housekeeping, feeding/nourishment, dressing, bathing, catheter care, measuring vital signs, first aid, CPR, Heimlich Maneuver, communication skills, dealing with dementia, and end of life care to name a few. By completing a state-approved program, and submitting a completed application and background screening you will also become eligible to apply for the CNA Final Exams.
Registered nurses from other states are also welcome to apply for the exams. When they apply, they will be asked to show proof of their education and training such as their transcripts of records. They will are also required to meet the minimum hours required for practical training.
Passing the license exams is the only way to get your name entered in the Nurse Aide Registry. You will not be allowed to work in the state if your name is not in the registry. Even those who are applying for reciprocity are still required to take the exams. Contact the Kansas Nurse Aide Registry by dialing (785) 296-6877 or visit their website at www.ksnurseaidregistry.org to get further information about the latest steps you need to take to become certified.
