According to the law, you can only work as a nurse aide in the State of Rhode Island if your name is on the Nurse Aide Registry, and if you have an active certification. To get your name entered into the NAR and get certified, you need to pass the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program Exam.

Candidates who have trouble reading can request to take the oral version of the written test. This exam was developed to test the competency of every aspiring nurse aide candidate in the United States. To help sort the competent from the incompetent ones, only those who have completed a state-approved training program are eligible to apply.

Establishing Eligibility:

New Nurse Aide

All nurse aide students who are applying for the NNAAP exam are required to successfully complete a Rhode Island Department of Health approved training program. These programs are required to offer at least 100 hours of instructions and must not last more than 90 days. However, most of the programs offer 88 hours of classroom/laboratory instructions and 32 hours of supervised practical training in a certified nursing facility. Students are handled by a clinical instructor who has at least 2 years of nursing experience and has completed the Train-the-Trainer course.

Nursing Students/Graduates

A nursing student who is actively matriculated in an approved nursing program and has completed at least 2 clinical courses may apply for the NNAAP exam. Interested candidates need to submit their transcript of records, to show proof of their training and education, to the Rhode Island Department of Health.

Applying for the NNAAP exam

Once your training is complete you can submit a completed application along with your proof of completion of training, immunization records, photo I.D.’s, TB card, fingerprint card, and the results of your background checks to schedule a time to take the test.  If your instructor didn’t give you the forms, you can visit www.pearsonvue.com or call the CCRI at (401) 333-7077 to obtain the necessary forms. An NATP or Nursing Assistant Training Program will teach you all you need to know about being a competent nursing assistant. Their curriculum is made up of at least 35 hours of lectures and 50 hours of supervised clinical practice. Both theory and practical training are taught concurrently. It can take about 2 to 6 months to complete a program depending on the one you choose.

As soon as you are through, the next step is to apply for the NNAAP exam. This is a two part examination that comprises of a multiple-choice knowledge test and a skills evaluation exam. Candidates who have trouble taking written examinations can request for an oral exam for no extra cost. Candidates must pass both tests to gain entry into the Nurse Aide Registry.

If a candidate fails, he can immediately reapply and reschedule another exam. Every CNA candidate is given 3 attempts to pass. During the retesting, a candidate is only required to retake the test that he failed. If a candidate fails for the 3rd time, then he must complete another training program before he can reapply once again.

Once you get certified, you’ll need to work for at least 8 hours as a paid nursing assistant to qualify for renewal. NA Certifications in Washington must be renewed every 2 years.  If a holder lets his certification expired for more than 2 years, then he will have to undergo retraining and retesting to work as a nursing assistant once again.

You should enroll in a program that provides curriculum that will prepare you to take the state competency exam and get you ready for the job as a CNA. Classes must be approved by the Tennessee state registry and provide 75 hours of both hands-on and class lectures.

Those who pass the class course will be apply to apply to take the certification exam. Basically the exam will test you on 5 of the 25 proficiencies you learned during your school instruction. The certification exam was designed to test the competency of the nursing aide candidate in terms of knowledge and skills. To get into the NAR, you are required to pass the written/oral knowledge test and the random skills evaluation. Both of these exams are given on the same day at approved testing sites. In some sites, candidates can have the option of taking the exam online through WebETest.

You can only apply for the exams if you:

•    Complete a state-approved CNA program
•    Complete military training as a medic or corpsman
•    Complete the Fundamentals of Nursing as an RN graduate or a licensed practical nurse

On the exam day, it is important that you bring a valid government-issued ID and your Social Security Card. You will not be allowed to take the exams if you fail to bring those two. You must also arrive at least 20-30 minutes before the start of the exams. Latecomers are not allowed to take the exams and are not given a refund.

Those who meet all requirements and pass the competency exam are included on the nurse aide registry for 24 months. Once your name is on the Nurse Aide Registry, it will be your responsibility to maintain your certification and keep your record updated. If you changed your name or address, you must inform the Registry through writing. To keep your name on the NAR, you must renew your certification every 2 years. One of the requirements is that you must have worked for at least 8 hours every in a nursing facility that is approved by the Division of Health Care Facilities. Enrolling in an LNA training program is the first step in becoming a licensed nurse aide. It is important that you enroll in a program that is approved by the state’s Department of Health to ensure that your training will meet federal and state standards. You don’t have to worry about taking time looking for a suitable program since they are offered almost anywhere in the state.
