Nurse aides work under the supervision of licensed nurses. The work of a nurse aide constantly varies depending on the tasks that are delegated by them. Although the tasks might vary depending on the patients’ needs; there is still a limit to the care that they can perform since they are only entry-level professionals.

All aspiring nurse aides in the state need to successfully complete state-approved classes to learn how to perform the basic nursing procedures that nurse aides are allowed to perform. A certified training program will also help aspirants learn how to deal with different scenarios that they might encounter. Nurse aide training curriculum consists of theoretical coursework and hands-on training while under the supervision of a nursing assistant instructor. It can take around 3 to 4 months to complete a training program, depending on its schedule.

You can work as a temporary nurse aide in any healthcare facility by getting a temporary license. This license will allow you to work for up to 120 days. If you wish to continue working, then you must clear the background checks and pass the certification exams to become a certified nurse aide and be allowed to work as a full-time CNA.

The certification exam was developed to test an aspiring nurse aide in both knowledge and skills. The knowledge test may be taken as either a written or oral exam, depending on which one the applicant indicates when completing the application form. Aspirants must pass both tests to get certified.

If you are not currently employed as an noncertified nurse aide, you will have 12 months after completing your training to pass both tests. Each applicant is given five attempts to pass. This will allow nurse aide applicants to prepare themselves for the tests. The handbook also contains sample tests that can be practiced on.

A certified nurse aide who wishes to further improve his skills and knowledge should either aim for a higher degree or acquire an advanced certification and become a CNA II.  A Level II is allowed to perform additional skills such as assisting in oxygen therapy, perform wound care, remove catheters, perform PEG feeding, and assist with peripheral IV fluids.

Like the process of getting a basic certification, applicants who wants to get this advanced certification will have to undergo further training and testing.
