According to the law, all nursing aides who work in a licensed long-term care facility or a sub-acute unit must be registered. Those working in an acute health care unit however, do not necessarily need to be.
The certification process to become a nursing aide starts by enrolling in a training facility that is licensed to offer the Nurse Aide in Long- Term Care Facility and Competency Evaluation Program. To ensure that the training and education the nursing aide candidates will be standardized, the NJDOH has created an approved curriculum. This curriculum will be tackling different concepts such as the psycho-social needs, recreational needs, and physical needs of the patients and how to take care of them. All concepts will be taught in a classroom and a practical way to ensure maximum competency.
The candidates’ competency will then be tested by the written and the skills evaluation exams that are given by the training facility, which is assisted by PSI. By passing all the exams, the candidate will get his name entered on the Nurse Aide Registry, which is also run by PSI.
It is also mandatory for all nursing aides and nursing aide candidates to undergo a routine criminal background investigation. Those who are enrolled in a state-certified program will get their CBI application forms and fingerprint appointment forms from their instructors, as well as the schedules.
Reciprocity is also offered in the state of New Jersey for those who are CNAs that come from other states. When applying, the applicant will have to show documents that prove his training and experience. The applicant must come from a state-approved training program. They must also have no criminal background which will disqualify them.
The CBI is also a requirement for those who are applying for reciprocity. The CBI processing usually takes 12 weeks to complete. For those who are already working in a LTC center, they are given a temporary license and are allowed to work for up to 120 days, provided that you answered “no” to two of the screening questions.
