Training and testing to become a certified nursing assistant are requirements before you can work in the state of Alabama. The first step is to enroll in a state approved training facility that will teach you the basics of nursing care.
Many nursing homes will hire you and put you through a program to learn the skills you need. In addition you can enroll in a college course that will ready you for taking the certification exams. The license exams are two-part which are a hands-on skills test and a written competency test. Students receive three attempts to take the tests in a 24 month period. If you pass you will be placed on the Alabama nurse aide registry and be eligible to work as a certified nursing assistant. Call the registry at (334)206-5169 to receive additional information about the recent certification requirements.
Once you are licensed you will need to renew your certification after a period of 24 months. This is done by submitting verification of having worked in an accepted care home, or hospital in the state. Currently licensees are required to have worked eight hours or more. You should receive notification prior to your renewal date. It is important that the registry be notified if you change addresses so they can sent you this notice. Call the registry for further specifics about qualifications and rules at 1-877-889-0939.
