The first step in becoming a nursing assistant is to enroll in a state-approved CNA training course. Nursing assistants help nurses take care of patients by providing mainly routine and basic care. It is important that before you handle any patients on your own as a nursing assistant, you must first learn how to do it properly.

When looking for a course to enroll in, choose only those that are approved by the state’s Department of Health or their corresponding certifying organization. Approved programs will offer you a minimum of 75 hours of training with no less than 16 hours allocated for clinical practice. You will learn different concepts as well as at least 25 different nursing skills. Programs are to be administered by a registered nurse and will provide you with both hands-on clinical experience and class lectures. You may find these programs offered by community colleges, private institutions, nursing homes, hospitals, assisted living centers, etc.

Many of the programs in Tennessee can be completed within 3-4 months of training. At the end of your training, you will receive a certificate of completion and a training registration roster. The certification exam consists of a written and a skills evaluation exam. For those who have trouble with reading English, they can request to have an oral exam instead, by sending a letter to D&S DT along with the application forms. For the competency exams you will be tested on 5 of the skills you learned during class training. You will need to successfully demonstrate that you know the proper health care procedures for the skills chosen during the test. You will also need to have at least a 70% or above score on the written exam.

If you pass all of the exams, your name will be added to the Nurse Aide Registry and you will receive your nursing assistant certificate. According to the law, only certified nursing assistants who are listed in the state’s NAR are allowed to work in nursing facility approved by the Division of Health Care Facilities.

Employers in such facilities are required to verify the certification of each of their applicants before hiring. They can verify by going to http://health.state.tn.us/Licensure/default.aspx or by calling (800) 774-4504. CNAs must renew their certification every 2 years to keep it updated and their names on the Registry. An expired certification will can no longer be renewed and no individual is allowed to work with an expired certificate. Renewal is accomplished by sending in verification that you were employed as a nurse aide for at least one 8 hour shift.
