Step 1: Enrolling in an NATP program.
CNA training consists of both lectures and practical training. Approved programs are required to teach 16 modules and offer no less than 150 hours of training. 50 of the hours are allotted for classroom lectures while the remaining 100 will be for the practical training in the nursing facility. When choosing a program to enroll in, make sure that the program you select is approved by the state’s Department of Public Health.
Step 2: Passing Background Checks with Fingerprinting
To protect the patients all aspiring nursing assistants must get fingerprinted and pass the background checks. The background checks in California are one before the start of the clinical rotation of the program. The training institution must submit a copy of each student’s completed Request of Live Scan Service Forms to ATCS.
Step 3: Applying for the NNAAP Exam
Completing an NATP will make you eligible to apply for the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program exam. This exam will determine if an aspirant is competent to function independently as a nursing assistant. You can get an application packet from your instructor or download it from www.pearsonvue.com or www.cdph.ca.gov. Application forms must be submitted to your local Regional Testing Center.
Please do not forget to include the payment of $90 for the testing fee. There is an additional cost of $15 for those who selected to take the oral exam for the knowledge test. Payments must only be in the form of money orders or company checks, and must be made payable to the testing center.
Step 4: Taking the NNAAP Exam
The NNAAP exam consists of a 2-hour knowledge test and a 25-minute practical skills test. Both of the exams are given on the same day so please plan accordingly. To get your CNA certification you must pass all the tests.
You will need to arrive at least 20 minutes prior to the actual scheduled time. Latecomers will not be permitted to get into the testing area once the exam has started. Remember that all payments are non-refundable and you will not get a refund if you failed to take an exam because of tardiness.
Step 5: Receiving Your CNA Certificate
If you pass all the tests the Aide and Technician Certification Section of the L&C Program will send you your CNA certificate. This will act as proof that you have met the federal and state training and testing requirements and are allowed to work in a certified nursing facility.
