One of the best ways to enter the field of health is to become a certified nurse aide (CNA). Certified nurse aides in this state are commonly referred to as Nursing Assistant-Certified or NAC. Regardless of the name, their tasks are still the same – they assist licensed nurses in providing nursing and nursing-related care to patients in different healthcare settings, including the patient’s own homes.
What makes NAC so special?
Nursing assistants are entry-level professionals. Compared to other careers, it’s much easier and quicker to become a nursing assistant. There is also more than one way of getting the training that you need. If the right requirements are met, you’ll be allowed to start working as one even without a certification.
What are the requirements to become a nursing assistant?
– Complete an approved training program
– Be physically healthy and free from any communicable diseases
– Pass the federal and state background checks for criminal records
– Take and pass the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program Examination
– Apply for a Nursing Assistant Certification from the Washington State Department of Health
Where can you train to become a nursing assistant?
There are various ways to equip you with the necessary knowledge and skills to become a nursing assistant. Enrolling in a state-approved Nurse Aide Training Program or NATP is a great way to this. NATPS are offered by different healthcare institutions and schools such as hospitals, nursing homes, community colleges, high schools, vocational and technical colleges, government organizations, and private training institutions.
What will you learn in an NATP?
Nursing assistant training comprises a minimum of 35 hours of lectures and 50 hours of clinical practice while under the supervision of a registered nurse. Both lectures and practical training are taught simultaneously. Before the students are allowed to take care of the patients, they are first taught about infection control, basic nursing care, personal care, communication skills, safety and emergency care, and many more.
What are the other ways to become a nursing assistant?
Generally speaking, the only way for you to become an NAC is by taking the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program Examination NNAAP exam. This exam is only available to individuals who completed a state-approved training course. However, you can establish eligibility through different means such as any of the following:
• Attending or completing a nursing education program as a nursing student or graduate
• Completing a military medic or corpsman training course
• Completing an Alternative “Bridge” Program
• Completing an approved training program that’s in another state
• Having a Lapsed NA certificate that hasn’t expired for more than 1 year
What is the NNAAP Exam?
This exam consists of a written/oral test and a skills evaluation exam. Candidates are required to pass both tests in order to get into the Nurse Aide Registry. As soon as their names are entered into the Registry, they will then be allowed to apply for an NA Certification from the DOH.
