Working as a nursing aide in California can be very fulfilling and rewarding. You get to have a stable job where the opportunities are constantly increasing and at the same time you get to help out people who need assistance with their health and daily activities. Becoming a nursing aide involves completing a CDPH-approved training program, passing the criminal background check and the NNAAP exams.
CNA training programs are divided into two parts. The first part is the classroom instructions where you will spend 16 hours learning about communication skills, mental health, safety and emergency procedures, rights and independence, roles and responsibilities, and infection control. Once you are through, you will then proceed to the clinical practice of the program, where you will be placed under the supervision of a clinical instructor. Approved-programs are required by the federal and state to offer no less than 150 hours of training.
The background checks are done either before you take the NNAAP exams or as soon as you enroll in a program. Many of the healthcare facilities who are offering CNA training are required to pay for the fingerprint Live Scans. You will be notified if you have any records that prevent you from being certified.
Completing a state-approved program will make you eligible to apply for the NNAAP exams. This exam consists of a written/oral knowledge test and a skills test. If you pass both of them, you will gain entry into the NAR and will receive your certification from the Aide and Technician Certification Section. Employers will only hire those whose names are on the NAR.
If you are a CNA from another state and is currently listed, you may gain entry into the CA Registry by applying for reciprocity. When you apply, you must have a valid certification and a clean background. You must not have any records of offenses that prevent you from being certified in California. To apply, you must provide proof of your training, education, and current certification along with the application form (http://www.asisvcs.com/publications/pdf/070503.pdf) to the ATCS. If you are found qualified, you will gain entry without the need for additional training and testing.
CNA certificates in CA are only valid for 2 years. It is the holder’s responsibility to renew his/her certification before it expires. If your certification expires, you will no longer be allowed to work in a certified nursing facility as a nursing aide. You can reactivate an expired certificate, without any need for re-training, if it has not expired for over 2 years. You however, must still take and pass an evaluation exam.
