To become a nursing assistant, you must comply with the different requirements of the state. The first requirement is one of the most important ones. You must enroll yourself in a state-approved CNA course. These courses are offered by different institutions such as colleges, community training centers, as well as healthcare institutions like nursing homes. For a course to be approved, it must offer the students at least 100 hours of training, where 16 hours of those will be allocated to skills training before they are allowed to handle actual residents. These courses should also be coordinated by a registered nurse with a minimum of 2 years of experiences; the nurse should have at least 1 year of experience working in a long-term healthcare facility. These programs usually last from 2- 6 months.

After your training, your next step is to apply for the license exams by sending in your completed application forms along with the needed documents like fingerprint cards, ID photo, proof of your training, and the payment for the different fees. You will also need to undergo immunization and physical exams to determine that you are not a carrier of any communicable diseases. A common requirement for all applicants is the submission of the results for their background checks. You will not be able to proceed if you fail to prove a copy of the results.

All applications are forwarded to Thomson Prometric since they are the ones who are handling the state’s nurse aide license exams. Their exams are compose off a written and a skills evaluation. To get your name entered in the state’s Nurse Aide Registry, you must pass all the exams.  You will then be able to work, after passing the exam, for 2 years as a certified nursing assistant.
