Despite the turmoil in the economy, the healthcare industry will never be affected that much because will always be a necessity. There will always be a need for healthcare and its providers.

Another reason why people train to become nursing aides is because of its practicality. Compared to other careers, you can start working as a nursing aide only in a matter of weeks. All you need to work is to get a CNA certification. The certification process generally involves completing an approved training program, passing the criminal background checks, and passing the certification exam.

You cannot work in this state if you do not have a certified nursing assistant certification. There are several requirements that must be met in order to get a certification. Among the different requirements, the most important thing you must do is to take the state license exams after you complete a state-approved training course. It is the state’s Aide and Technician Certification Section that is in charge of approving the training programs. You must look for their approval before enrolling in a course.

State-approved training programs are offered through nursing homes, hospitals, long-term care centers, rehabilitation centers, assisted living centers, community colleges, vocational and technical colleges, government organizations, and other schools and institutions. They offer a minimum of 150 hours of lectures and supervised clinical training. Depending on the program you choose to enroll in, it can take you at least 2 to 6 months to complete your training.

The criminal background checks are normally done prior to the start of the clinical practice. Every training institution is required to submit a copy of each student’s completed Request for Live Scan Services. No student is allowed to proceed to the clinical area and handle any patient without passing the background checks for criminal records.  The other requirements for the exam include passing ID photo, fingerprint cards, complete application form, immunization records, as well as the physical examinations you undergone, and paying the examination fee.

Completing an approved training program establishes your eligibility to apply for the certification exam. If you are a registered nurse, licensed vocational nurse, a military-trained medic, a nursing student/graduate, or if you completed a similar training program you can also apply for the certification exam. The certification exam is divided into a 70-item multiple-choice written test and a clinical skills evaluation. If you have trouble reading English, you can request to have an oral version of the written test. Candidates are given 2 hours to answer all 70 questions and 25 minutes to perform all the required skills in the skills evaluation.

A Candidate must pass all the tests within 3 attempts and within 2 years after completing his or her training. If a candidate passes all the tests, he will receive a CNA certificate issued by the Aide and Technician Certification Section of the L&C Program. The certificate will serve as proof that a candidate has met all the federal and state training and testing requirements.
