If you have never been a certified nursing aide before, then the only way you can work in a state-approved healthcare facility as a CNA is to pass the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program exam. The NNAAP exam was developed as a way to determine the competency of all aspiring nursing aides.
The NNAAP exam is a two part exam – a knowledge test and a skills test. The first part is the knowledge exam. It is initially offered as a written test but those who have trouble reading English can request to take an oral version of it. Aspirants are given 2 hours to answer all 70 multiple-choice questions. Aspirants must get at least 70% to pass this part.
In the skills test, aspirants are asked to perform 5 nursing procedures in front of a CNA evaluator. Each procedure will have a number of checkpoints; each checkpoint will have a corresponding score. To pass this test, aspirants must perform all procedures with at least 80% competency.
Those who will pass both tests will receive a certification issued by the state’s Aide and Technician Certification Section of the L&P program. Employers will always verify each applicant’s certification before hiring them. According to federal and state laws, a person can only work in a state-certified nursing facility if he or she has a nursing assistant certification.
Before one can apply for the NNAAP exam, one must first establish eligibility by completing a state-approved training program. Examples of ways to establish eligibility include completing a 150-hour CNA program, take up courses involving the Fundamentals of Nursing, or get trained as a military medic or corpsman.
Certified nursing aides from other states are welcome to apply for reciprocity. Reciprocity will allow applicants to transfer their certifications to California and work in the state as nurse aides. Applicants must have a current certification and a clean record. They must not have any records of patient abuse, negligence, or theft of the patient’s property.
