For you to pass a nursing assistant training program that is approved by the state of Maryland, you have to complete the needed hours and learn the basic nursing skills that are required to take care of a patient. Currently classes need to provide a total of a minimum of 100 hours of combined class instruction, and basic practice in a health care environment. Once you pass the training program, you must submit an application, immunization records, and background check to take a license exam to be able to practice legally.

grandpa-and-grandson-922A CNA certification is only considered in Maryland as a basic certification. There are several other certifications that you can add on top of that one if you want to achieve a higher degree. For example, if you want to work in a dialysis unit, you will need to get a Dialysis Technician certification. To do this, you must enroll yourself in a CNA-DT training program that is approved by the state. After your training, you will then take the competency exams. Those two that are the core requirements for initial certification.

Certification as a DT is only up to two years. It expires and must be renewed on the state date as your nurse aide license. You may do this via their online renewal site 60 days before or 30 days after its expiration date. To be eligible, you must have worked for at least 16 hours as well as complete a 3 hour continuing education course that is taught by a certified DT training program. These courses include, but are not limited to:

1.    The current regulation about a CNA’s role in dialysis
2.    New procedures
3.    Resources that are available to CNAs in dialysis

There are other advanced certifications available in this state. These are Home Health Aide, Certified Medicine Aide, and Geriatric Assistant. You can contact the Maryland Board of Nursing for additional information about all of the advanced certifications or ask any other questions by calling 410-585-1990.

grandma-drinking-coffeeIf you are not satisfied with a basic certification, you can then move on to advance courses, which you can add on to your nurse aide certification, like GNA, Dialysis Technician, Medication Aides, or Home Health Aide. If you want to get an advance degree, you will need to comply with additional requirements. For example, to be a CMA, you will need to complete an additional 60 hour training course. Once you finish the course, it will be the training program that will inform the Board. In turn, the Board will then add the new certification on top of the ones you already have. You should avoid working as a CMA until you have verified your certification in their online site.

Advance certifications will expire on the same day as your license. This may be less than the usual 2 years for initial certification.
