[Level 1 and Level 2 Nurse Aid Programs Available]
To work as a nursing aide in Oregon, you must get your name on the state’s Nurse Aide Registry. There are two general ways to do this. One is by applying for endorsement or reciprocity, which is only available nursing aides who are registered in a different state, and by passing the state competency evaluation exam.
To qualify for endorsement, you must provide proof that you completed a training program that meets the standards of OBRA; hold a current CNA certification in another state (s); have worked for at least 400 hours as a CNA for the past 2 years, while under the supervision of a registered nurse; and you must provide proof that you were paid to provide nursing services.
If you want to apply for this, you will need to download a copy of the endorsement form from http://www.oregon.gov/OSBN/pdfs/form/cnaendorse.pdf. Aside from the documents mentioned above, you will also need to send a non-refundable fee of $60 for the endorsement process and $52 for the fingerprint processing. Before you submit the documents, please make sure that your certification has not yet expired.
If you are not yet a certified nursing assistant, you will have to get certified by challenging the competency exam. To be eligible to take the exams, you must first complete a state-certified nursing assistant 1 training program. It can take you 10 to 13 weeks to complete your training, depending on which program you enroll in. If you are a nursing student or a graduate, you can apply directly to take the exams. When you apply, you’ll just need to submit in addition a copy of your diploma and/or transcript of records.
The state of Oregon has certified Headmaster to conduct the examination and assist with the scoring. The competency exam will consist of a written/oral exam and a clinical skills test. You must pass all the tests to get your certificate.
CNA certificate in this state is only valid for 24 consecutive months. If you want to continue to be eligible for work as a nursing aide, you will have to work for 400 hours as a nursing aide before your certification expires. The expiration date will always fall on midnight of your date of birth. If you have an advance certification like CMA, the work you did as a CMA will already count as qualified work for a nursing aide.
