If you want to help take care of people and work in the medical field, the best choice for you is to become a nursing aide. Pursuing this line of career is very practical since the training does not cost that much and does not take that long. On average, a state-approved training program can cost around $400 to $1000. If you have money problems, there are also other programs that offer low or free training. An example of this institution is the American Red Cross Association.
Since the demand for this profession is continuously on the rise, more and more students are also enrolling in training programs. This resulted in the training programs looking for additional nursing instructors. If you are a registered nurse and love to educate and train adults, you can apply to be a nursing aide instructor. To be one, you must have at least 2 years of experience providing nursing services where one of those years are spent at a long-term care facility. You must also have a background in educating adults or at least supervising nursing aide students during the clinical portion of their training.
Only people who are listed on the Nurse Aide I Registry are allowed to work in North Carolina as a nursing aide. The only way to get on the registry is by challenging the state evaluation exam. Since the state does not accept reciprocity, CNAs from other states are also required to take the exam.
This exam has two parts. The first part is the knowledge tests, which can be taken either in the written form or its oral version. For those who are taking the oral version, they may choose to take it in either English or Spanish. All questions for this part will be multiple-choice. Candidates are also given a maximum of 2 hours to answer everything. The second part is the skills evaluation. In this part, the candidates will have to perform 5 randomly selected nursing skills in a given scenario in front of an evaluator.
The results of the exams are normally released on the exam date. If you pass all the tests, your name will be entered in the registry and you will receive your certification, which is valid for 24 months. To remain on the registry, you must submit the renewal application form and provide proof that you were able to work as a paid nursing aide for a minimum of 8 hours while under the supervision of a registered nurse.
