The first step in becoming a nursing assistant is that you have to apply for a nursing assistant training program. But before you can be accepted in one, you will need to pass a routine background check to prove that you do not have any felonies. Passing the 9th grade is also a requirement for enrolling in a program. Before you are allowed to handle any patient as a nursing aide, you will need to undergo proper education and training. To become a certified nursing aide, you must enroll in a state-approved training program and pass the state exams.

lewiston-maineDuring instruction you will be spending most of your time in lectures, skills training, and clinical experiences. Typically aides are tasked with caring for the general well being of patients and residents in their care under the supervision of a registered nurse. They are to assist the nurse with administering care. This includes performing housekeeping duties, feeding/nourishment, providing ambulation/body movement, providing help with personal hygiene, reporting and recording observations and vital signs, and assisting with emergency situations. To complete a program, you have to meet 180 hours of training.

Once you are through with your training, you will be allowed to apply for the license exams. Aside from that, you will also be allowed to work in a nursing home for up to 4 months. If you want to continue, then you will need to get your name on the Registry. Your name will only be entered on the Nurse Aide Registry if you are able to pass both the written exam and the practical demonstration of the nursing skills. To pass the written exams, you will need to get a 70% rating. As for the second part of the exams, you must be able to perform 7 out of the 10 nursing skills satisfactorily. A license is a requirement for you to start your work as a certified nursing assistant in Maine.
