A nursing aide is a very important member of the health care team, especially to nurses who are working in health care facilities such as nursing homes. Nursing aides provide nursing care that is delegated by the nurses. Depending on where the person works, a CNA in California can make a yearly salary from $20,000 to $37,000.  To work as a nursing aide in this state, you must get a CNA certificate. Getting a certificate will involve training, passing the background checks, and challenging the certification exam.

If are interested in pursuing this career, it is important that you enroll only in a CDPH-approved CNA training program. This will ensure that your training is standard-level and that you will become eligible to apply for the exams afterwards. CNA training will consists of lectures and clinical practice in a nursing facility. While enrolled in the class you will be spending most of your time in classroom lectures and skills training. It will take 150 hours to complete a program. The program will usually take about 8 weeks to complete.

The background checks are done before the students proceed to the clinical area. The training facility must provide a copy of each student’s Request for Live Scan Services. No student is allowed to handle any patient without undergoing the background check first.

As soon as you are through, you can then start filling out the application forms to take the certification exam. You can get an application packet from either your instructor or by downloading it online. Those who complete their course instruction will need to pass the license exam within two years or have to retake the program. The certification exam is divided into a multiple-choice knowledge test and a skills evaluation exam. Each applicant is allowed three attempts within the two year period to take the exams. The exams are given in two separate portions which are a manual demonstration exam, and a multiple choice test. If you pass all of the tests, you will get your certificate from the Aide and Technician Certification Section. Your training will only be valid for 2 years. This means that you must get certified within that time. If you fail to get certified, you will have to complete another training program.

To keep working as a nursing aide in California, you must keep your certificate current. This can be done by renewing your certification every 24 months. A notice will be sent out by the ATCS at least 4 months before your certificate expires. To ensure that you will receive this notice, please inform the ATCS if ever you change your name or address.

To inform the ATCS of name and address changes, you can either mail or fax the Request for Change of Name/Address Form (http://www.cdph.ca.gov/pubsforms/forms/CtrldForms/cdph0929.pdf). For a small additional fee, you can also request for a duplicate certificate with your updated information on it.
