Working as a CNA is a great job choice in California because of the strong demand for workers. There are a large amount of training institutions that offer courses to become certified. You can typically find faculties that offer classes in vocational schools, nursing facilities, and colleges throughout the state.
The first step in becoming a nursing assistant in California is to search and enroll in a Nurse Aide Training Program or an NATP. NATPs in California are required to be certified in order for them to take on any students. These programs are required to consist of no less than 150 hours of training, which are divided into theory and supervised clinical practice. As a nursing aide student you will be taught different basic nursing skills like, catheter care, monitoring vital signs, help in maintaining a clean room, aiding in ambulation, perform passive exercise with the patients if they are unable to perform them, transporting patients, and many more.
Another requirement is that every program must be headed by a Director of Staff Development or DSD. This term is synonymous with Instructor. According to state law, an Instructor must be a registered nurse with at least 2 years of nursing experience. One of those years must have been spent providing nursing care to patients in a nursing facility. The nurse must have also completed 24 hours of continuing education courses in planning, implementing, and evaluating nursing programs, within 6 months prior to becoming a DSD/Instructor.
Before the students proceed to the clinical area for their practical training, they must be fingerprinted and undergo the criminal background checks. To qualify to enroll in a class you must be 16 years old, pass a criminal record clearance & background check, as well as pass a physical exam. The checks will be done in both federal and state levels. In addition, the students must also spend the first 16 hours of training learning about infection control, communication and interpersonal skills, safety and emergency procedures, and patient rights and independence.
Completing a CDPH-approved NATP will make you eligible to apply for the certification exam, which is conducted by Pearson VUE. The exam is a written test that is made up of 70 multiple choice problems and a demonstration test that will challenge you to perform five different skills in a live medical setting. Each applicant is allowed three attempts within two of finishing their training classes. Both portions must be passed in order to get placed on the registry and become qualified to work. Passing this exam is the final step in becoming a nursing assistant. If you pass both the 70-item written/oral exam and the 5 random nursing skills test, you will get certified by the Aide and Technician Certification Section or ATCS.
Your training will only be valid for 24 months. This means that you will only have that time to get certified. If you fail in one portion of the exam, you will have to reapply and retake the test. Each candidate is only allowed to retest twice. Failing for the 3rd time will mean that you will have to undergo retraining before you can reapply.
Unlike some states, California-issued CNA certificates are only valid for 2 years and must be renewed before they expire. The ATCS require nursing assistants to work for at least 8 hours under the supervision of a registered nurse, and complete 48 hours of in-service/CE. The ATCS sends out notices at least 16 weeks before the expiration of the certificates. After passing the exams you can verify your inclusion on the nurse aide registry by contacting the California Certification Unit at (916) 327-2445.
