The only way that you are allowed to work in a nursing facility as a nursing assistant is if you become licensed. You will only get a certification if you pass the state license examinations. Before you are allowed to take the exams though, you must complete a training program that meets the curriculum, and hourly specifications set by the state registry.
A nursing aide is a person that is paid to continuously provide health care, which has been delegated by registered nurses, to patients. According to the law, all nursing aides must be registered on the state’s Nurse Aide Registry, which is under the Board of Nursing.
The Nurse Aide Registry is a masters list of individuals who were able to comply with the training and competency evaluation requirements. These individuals have been found by the state competent to take care of the patients and thus are the only ones allowed to work as a CNA in a long-term care facility.
The Registry contains information about the nursing aide such as complete name, identifying information, the date of which the individual took and pass the LNA examinations. It also includes other information such as records of abuse or neglect.
The CNA licenses in the state last only for 2 years. To continue your eligibility to work, you must renew it before it expires. One of the basic requirements is that you must have worked for at least 8 hours as a paid nursing aide every 24 consecutive months. For those that are working in long-term care facilities, they will have an additional required hours for in-service.
