The process of becoming a nursing assistant in California is exciting and challenging. This type of job is in demand in different health care settings from hospitals to nursing homes. As a nursing assistant you get to help patients with different daily activities under the general supervision of a registered nurse.

To get certified, you must complete CDPH-approved training program and take on the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program exam. If you pass the NNAAP exam you will become a certified nursing assistant. Employers will only hire those who are certified by the Aide and Technician Certification Section of the L&C Program.

CNA programs in California are offered by health care providers, and private and public institutions and schools. You can find them being offered by vocational and technical colleges, nursing homes, hospitals, assisted living centers, private training centers, and many more. Nursing assistant candidates can also enroll in the training program offered by the American Red Cross.

Programs must offer the appropriate amount of hourly instruction and curriculum that is required at the state and federal level. Before you can enroll you will need to receive a full criminal background screen and a physical exam. In addition you must submit identifying documentation, fingerprint card, TB card, and immunization record. Those who meet all requirements can begin attending class and will be taught the fundamental nursing related skills used on the job.

CNA training consists of both theory and practical training. Approved programs take 150 hours to complete and are required to cover 16 different modules. These programs are headed by qualified instructors with backgrounds in teaching adults. Students will learn about nutrition, vital signs, medical and surgical asepsis, and skills like how to assist the patients with their daily activities.

Those who complete training will need to schedule a time to take the license exams. These exams must be passed within 24 months of completing training. The NNAAP exam is conducted by the Pearson VUE Testing Company. It consists of a multiple-choice knowledge test and a skills evaluation of different nursing skills that were taught in the program. Candidates will have 2 hours for the knowledge test and 25 minutes for the skills evaluation. To get certified they must pass all the tests within 3 attempts and within 2 years of completing their training. Nursing students and graduates are allowed to apply directly for the exams without any need for additional training. Before they apply, they must first provide proof of training and education to the ATCS. This is also offered to military-trained medics and corpsmen.

Those who do pass the license exams are included on the states nurse aide registry. This registry is an online database that employers check to see if you are eligible to work. Once you become eligible to work your status is good for 24 months before you need to send in additional verification. California is open to CNAs from other states who wish to transfer and work in the state. Before they work, they must first apply for reciprocity. This process will allow them to transfer their certification into CA. Applicants must have a current certification and a clean record. Those who are listed in the Abuse Registry will not be allowed to work in a CDPH-approved health care facility.
