In becoming a nursing assistant you must complete several different requirements. One of the requirements for you to be able to be certified in Texas is to pass both the federal and the state background check. You will also have to complete a CNA training program and pass the competency exam. To enroll in a program, you will not be required to shown a high school or any diploma.
The training program is required to be approved by the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS) so that it meets state standards for instruction. The class will teach fundamental nursing related skills in a medical environment giving you actual hands-on practice using common tasks and procedures. In addition you will receive theoretical health care instruction that covers state and federally mandated information.
Once you have completed the class you will want to find a location to take the competency exams. You can call 1-800-444-5178 the phone number for Nurse Aide Competency Evaluation Services to find a test facility. When you take the exam you will need to successfully demonstrate five skills that are randomly selected and answer a 70 question multiple choice test to pass. Those who pass within three tries for each test become certified to work and are placed on the nurse aide registry for Texas.
