Getting a CNA certification in California can be a very rewarding experience. California is one of the best places to be employed as a nursing aide in the United States. Its demand is currently higher than the national average, and their nurse aides receive some of the best salaries.
Obtaining a certification in the state involves completing an approved training program, passing the national background checks as well as the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program exam. Those who took up units on the Fundamentals of Nursing, like nursing students and graduates, are also allowed to apply for the NNAAP exam.
CNA training in the state consists of at least 50 hours of lectures and 100 hours of supervised clinical practice. Both the classroom and clinical training are taught concurrently (at the same time). Depending on the program you choose, the length of your training can last from about 2 to 6 months. Students are taught different important concepts like infection control, basic nursing care, safety and emergency procedures, personal care, medical terminologies, human anatomy, and many more.
Completing a program will make you qualified to apply for the NNAAP exam. However, there are also other ways to become qualified aside from those mentioned above. Registered nurses, LPNs, and military-trained medics can also apply by showing proof of their training and education.
The NNAAP exam consists of a 2-hour knowledge test and a 25-minute skills exam. Candidates are able to choose whether to take the written or oral version of the knowledge test. Both knowledge and skills test costs $90. Those who opt to take the oral exam are charged an additional $15. If you wish to take the oral exam, please indicate upon submitting your application form to the Regional Testing Center. A request made on the day of the exam cannot be accommodated by the testing site.
California offers reciprocity to nursing aides in other states. This will allow them to transfer their certification to California and work there. To be eligible for reciprocity, the applicants must provide proof of an active certification and a clean record. Applicants are still required to get fingerprinted through Live Scan and undergo the federal and state background checks. Those who get approval from the ATCS will receive their certification without any need for any testing.
