A CNA certification is a requirement to work as a nursing aide in Virginia. Employers will only hire applicants who have a valid certification since this proves that they care competent nursing aides and were able to meet both the federal and state’s training and testing requirements. One way of getting a nurse aide certification is by challenging the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program Exam.

CNA Training and Establishing Eligibility

Before you can challenge the exam, you must first establish eligibility by successfully completing an officially recognized program. Now, there can be a lot of programs out there today, which can make it a bit confusing in selecting the right one. To help you choose, you must remember to only select a program that is approved by the Virginia Board of Nursing.
Approved programs consist of 75 hours of classroom instructions and supervised clinical practice.

Each program is headed by a licensed nurse with good nursing experiences working in a long-term care facility. Depending on the program you choose, it can take you 2-6 months to complete your training. As a student you will learn the basic nursing skills, personal care, and important concepts such as infection control, patients’ rights and independence, safety and emergency care, communication and interpersonal skills, and many more.

Nursing students, graduates, registered nurses, and licensed practical nurses who wish to apply for the exam can also do so if they want to. Before they submit their applications, they must first get an Authorization to Test from the Board. They will need to show proof of their training and education.

The National Nurse Aide Assessment Program Examination

The first part of the NNAAP exam is the multiple-choice knowledge test. Candidates who have trouble reading can request to have an oral exam instead of the written test. This test consists of 70 questions. Out of the 70 items only 60 will be recorded since the 10 are assessment questions that are designed for evaluation purposes. Candidates must answer all questions within 2 hours.

The second part of the examination is the skills evaluation. In this part, candidates will be asked to perform 5 randomly selected nursing procedures in front of a CNA evaluator. They will be given a total of 30 minutes to do all the procedures satisfactorily.

The Nurse Aide Registry

Candidates who are able to pass both tests will gain entry into the NAR. Once their name is on the NAR, they will be allowed to work in a state-certified nursing facility. To avoid jeopardizing your name on the Registry, you must keep your record updated. Please inform the NAR if you change your name or address by submitting the Change of Name/Address form, which can be found at the back of the Candidate Handbook.
