The process of becoming a nursing aide is simple and easy if you know what to do. The only main thing that you need to work as one is to get a CNA license. Since North Carolina does not offer reciprocity, the only way to get into the NAR is by taking the NNAAP exam.
Among the different routes to become eligible to apply, the most common is by completing a N. C. -approved CNA I training course. Once you enroll, you will be spending a total of 75 in classroom lectures and practical training. You will learn different concepts such as basic care, mental health and rehabilitation, residents’ rights and independence, safety and emergency procedures, communication techniques, and infection control.
There are also other means of gaining eligibility, which can be found in the candidate handbook (http://asisvcs.com/publications/pdf/073400.pdf), but the advantage of the route mentioned above is that you will be allowed to work as a nursing aide for up to 4 months.
The competency exam in this state is conducted by Pearson VUE. The exam, which was developed by the federal government consists of a written/oral portion and a clinical skills exam. To get into the Nurse Aide I Registry, you must pass all the tests. If you feel that you need some time before taking the exam, you are given a maximum of two years, from the day you completed your training, to get certified. If you fail after three attempts, you will no longer be allowed to take the exams unless you complete another training or refresher course.
If you have any problems or questions regarding the NNAAP exams, you can call Pearson VUE during working hours (8:00 am to 5:00 pm) at (888) 204-6207. You can also email them at pearsonvuecustomerservices@pearson.com
