Any individual who wishes to work in California as a nursing aide must be certified by the ATCS of the Licensing and Certification Program of the CDPH. If you do not have any background in the field of health, you will have to challenge the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program examination to get certified.
Before you can take the exam you must establish eligibility by completing a 150-hour training program that is approved by the CDPH. You will spend 50 hours in the classroom learning different nursing concepts and 100 hours in the clinical area for your supervised practical training. Approved programs are coordinated by registered nurses with at least 2 years of nursing experience. These nurses also completed courses involving educating adults. Depending on which program you choose, it can take you 4-6 months to complete a program.
Once you complete your training, you can then apply for the NNAAP exam by either mailing the application forms to Pearson VUE or going online at www.pearsonvue.com. This exam is divided into two parts – a written/oral knowledge test and a skills evaluation examination. You must pass all the tests to get certified. If you fail in one portion, you are required to reapply and retake the test you failed. If you fail after the third attempt, you will not be allowed to reapply unless you undergo retraining.
The results of the exams are released on the same day if there are not technical problems. The ATCS will send you your CNA certificate within 10 days after you pass. You will use this certification when you apply for work as proof of your eligibility to work as a CNA. This certificate will remain valid for 2 years. It is important that you renew your certificate before it expires.
California is open to certified nursing aides from other states. If they wish to work in CA, they must first apply for reciprocity. Reciprocity will allow them to transfer their certification into the CA without any additional training or testing. To be eligible, the applicant must have a current certification and a clean record. He will be required to show proof of his training and experience to the ATCS to be accepted.
