In order to become a nurse aide in Utah, all aspiring nurse aides must gain entry into the Nurse Aide Registry. There is only one way to gain entry into the NAR, and that is by passing the NNAAP exam.
The NNAAP exam was developed to test the competency of all aspiring nurse aides. It is a two part exam that consists of a written test and a clinical skills exam. Candidates must pass both tests to gain entry into the NAR. Before one can take the exam, one must first apply for it. This exam however, is only available to individuals who were able to complete the required training.
You can apply for the NNAAP exam if you meet any of the following:
• Successfully complete a state-approved 80-hour course
• Successfully complete one semester of a nursing school
• Be able to provide proof of previous licensure as a registered nurse in Utah
• Be able to provide proof of certification as a nurse aide from Utah who has an expired certification for no more than 1 year.
Another way of becoming eligible is by applying for reciprocity. This process lets nurse aides from other states to apply in for the NNAAP exam without any need for additional training. Applicants must have an active certification and a clean record in order to qualify. Applicants must not have any accounts of abuse, neglect, or misappropriation of a patient’s property.
CNA certifications in this state are only valid for 2 years. The good news though is that the renewal is free, that is if you renew on time. Nurse aides are given a 30 day grace period after their certification expires. Their certification must be renewed within that time to prevent it from expiring. If they renew during their grace period, they will be charged $10. Nurse aides who fail to renew their certification can reactivate it by taking a competency exam within one year after the expiration of their certification.
