The process of becoming a nursing assistant or a nurse aide is fairly quick and simple. The main goal to achieve before you are allowed to work in a nursing home is to get your name entered on the Nurse Aide I Registry. To do this, you will have to challenge the license exams, unless you are a N.C. RN or LPN. North Carolina registered nurses and license practical nurses are allowed to automatically apply for entry into the Registry.

If you have to take the license exams, you will have to establish eligibility first. This can be done by completing a 75-hour training course that is approved by the state. Since there are no age requirements to become nursing assistant, high school students can also enroll in appropriate training programs. These programs are offered by different training institutions such as nursing homes, hospitals, community colleges, and even high schools.

While training to become a nursing assistant, you will be spending most of your time in lectures, laboratory works, and practical training. You will be taught on the different responsibilities and duties of a nursing assistant. The tasks that a nursing assistant will do will depend on the tasks that the registered nurses delegate to them. These tasks are mainly routine tasks such as assisting in their personal care, ambulating, preparing the patients for procedures, and do not involve any ongoing evaluation of the patient’s condition.

Nursing students and graduates from the state are also allowed to take the exams without the need to complete a state-approved training program. This also goes the same for other medical professionals such as EMT, medics, and medical office assistants. Certified nursing assistants from other states are still required to pass this state’s license exam since N.C. does not offer reciprocity or endorsement from other states.

The NNAAP examination was designed to test the candidates in both skill and knowledge. That is why there are two parts that the candidates must pass in order to enter the Registry. The students may take the written or oral exam and pair it with the clinical skills portion. All candidates must pass the exams within 3 attempts or 2 years from the time they completed their training.
