To work as a nursing assistant in North Carolina you must possess a CNA certification that was issued within the state. According to both federal and state laws, all individuals who want to work as a nursing assistant must be on the Nurse Aide I Registry. Since N.C. is a “challenge” state, the only way to get into the Registry is by passing the competency exams. CNAs from other states will also need to take this exam if they wish to work in N.C.
The competency examination is only available to those who received the proper education and training. The best way to establish eligibility is by completing a state-approved training program since you will be allowed to work as a nursing assistant for a maximum of 4 months. Other ways of gaining eligibility is by:
• Completing a certified nursing assistant program from a different state.
• Enrolling in or graduating from a nursing education program.
• Completing a N. C. -approved refresher course
• Completing training as a medic, EMT, or other health professionals.
Once you establish eligibility, the next step is to apply for the exams online at https://i7lp.integral7.com. Online application has now made it more convenient for the nursing assistant candidates to schedule an exam date. When scheduling for a date, please make your reservation at least 16 days before your preferred date. New applicants are required to make a new account. If you have any problems with the application process, feel free to contact Pearson VUE at (888) 204-6207.
Since the applications are now done online, the candidates can now pay the fees with the use of a credit card or a pre-paid credit card. For those who are initial takers and are taking both the written/oral test and the clinical skills test, they will need to pay $101. Those who are retaking the exams are only required to take the test that they failed in. The written or the oral exam costs $24 while the skills evaluation cost $77.
To get your nursing assistant certificate, you must pass all the tests. If you fail, you will be given another two attempts to pass. Failing for the third time will require you to undergo retraining before you can retake the test again.
