The completion of a nursing assistant class is an important step in becoming a nursing aide. In order to complete a course, you have to meet a number of hours in both lectures and actual practice. Your practice may either be held at a hospital or a nursing home. Those that already learned the basics of nursing and had previous practice may apply directly to take the license exams. In the state of Alaska you need to take a total of 140 hours of nursing assistant instruction to be eligible to take the certification exam.

The classroom instruction needs to include 60 hours of coursework and 80 hours of experience in a health care setting. During your class lessons you will get to practice many of the skills necessary for the job of a nursing assistant to provide you with hands-on experience in a real medical setting. To qualify for the certification you must pass a state and federal background screening, submit fingerprint cards, and an application with fee.

When you have completed the instruction course you will want to pass the license exams within a 24 month period. The exam is a manual skills demonstration and a written or oral test. It’s required to pass both parts in order to become licensed and eligible to be employed long term. Your entry on to the nurse aide registry qualifies you to be certified for a 24 month period. You will need to turn in verification of having worked to continue being listed in good standing.
