Becoming a nursing assistant can be one of the best career choices you can make. This profession is considered the best way to start a career in the field of health because of its demand. As soon as you become a certified nursing assistant, you will have no problems getting a job from various health care facilities throughout Tennessee.

Before you can become a certified nursing assistant, you will have to be a nursing assistant first. To achieve this, you must undergo training at an approved CNA training program. By completing a program that is approved by the Tennessee DOH, you will be allowed to apply for the competency exam. Passing the competency exam is one of the ways to gain entry into the Nurse Aide Registry. Once you are in the Registry, you will become certified.

The competency exam consists of two parts. The first part is the knowledge test. This is a 75-item multiple-choice written exam. You will have 90 minutes to answer all of the questions. If you have difficulty in reading English, an oral exam may be taken in conjunction with the written exam. If you want to get an oral exam, you will have to notify the D&S Diversified Technologies with a written request and send it along with your application form.

The second portion of the exams is the skills tests. In this portion, each candidate will be examined individually. You will be given a simple scenario where you will have to perform 5 nursing skills. The first of the skills will be hand washing while the rest will be randomly taken from a list. To pass, you must perform all the skills with 80% competency in order to pass. You will only be given 30 minutes to perform all 5 skills. If you finish ahead of time, you can use the remaining time to correct any steps you missed.

Some of the twenty-five skills you will learn during your training school instruction includes resident independence, communication skills, infection control procedures, CPR training, the Heimlich maneuver, patient rights, emergency preparedness, safety procedures, and interpersonal job skills. You must enroll and pass the state competency examination within twenty-four months after finishing your  training.

Your name will only be entered into the NAR if you pass all of the tests. Your name on the Registry will remain valid for 24 months. If you wish to continue your eligibility, you will have to renew your certification before it expires. If you fail to renew and wish to work again as a nursing assistant, you will have to start from the beginning by retraining and retesting. In order to remain listed there you will need to work an eight hour shift each two year period.
