A person may only work in a federally certified long-term care facility in Pennsylvania as a CNA if ones name is on the Nurse Aide Registry and has an active certification. One may gain entry into the NAR either through testing or endorsement.

If you have never been certified as a nursing assistant before, then your only option is to gain entry through testing. There are certain requirements that must be met first before an aspirant is allowed to apply for the certification exams. You’ll need to clear background checks for criminal records, undergo medical examinations, and complete CNA training classes.

No person is allowed to start training unless he passes the background checks. If an aspirant has been a resident of Pennsylvania for the last two (2) years, then he will only be required to take a state-level background check, which costs around $10. Nursing assistants who are still new in Pennsylvania are required to get both federal and state-level checks before enrolling.

Every aspiring candidate is required to only complete a training class that’s approved by the state’s Department of Education. Candidates can avoid all the hassle of looking for the good training school by just enrolling in the American Red Cross 4-week CNA training course. Despite lasting for only 4 weeks, the training schedule is well paced. Program classes will teach you the skills required on the job. Courses are coordinated by an experienced registered nurse and will provide classroom instruction and hands-on skills practice. During your skills training you will be able to learn and gain experience performing commonly used procedures and techniques in a setting similar to those in a nursing home or health care facility. Some of the skills you will learn during your instruction include: transporting patients, range of motion exercises, toileting, housekeeping, postmortem care, sub-acute care, infection control, safety procedures, nourishment & feeding, measuring and recoding vitals, taking blood pressure, catheter care, and dressing patients.

Once you complete your training, the next step is to complete the application forms and send them to the American Red Cross. You can get the forms by requesting one from the ARC or by downloading a copy from www.pearsonvue.com. There are some training schools that make the application process for their students. If there are enough students, some might even request for in-facility testing so that their students won’t have to go to a Regional Testing Center.

The CNA exams are divided into two parts – a written test and a manual skills demonstration. Candidates who have trouble reading can request to get an oral exam instead of the written test for no extra charge. Testing fees for both parts is $102. The CNA exams comply with the provisions of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Candidates may quest for additional accommodations if they have certain disabilities. The request for accommodations must be made upon application, and not on the day of the exams.

The exam results are released on the same day of the exams. Candidates who pass both portions of the test within three attempts are added to the state nurse aide registry for 24 months. The NAR will send a Registry Card within 3 weeks of passing to serve as proof of completing all requirements. CNAs whose names are on the NAR are required to keep their records updated. Please inform the NAR if you ever change your name, address, or social security number by going to www.pulseportalcom. Applicants might be required to provide proof of legal name changes such as marriage certificates or divorce certificates. Failure to inform the registry might put your name on the registry at stake.
