Certified nurse aide is an entry-level position in the healthcare industry. It is one of the quickest and most practical ways to start a career as a healthcare provider. Compared to other career options, you can become a CNA in a few weeks of continuous training.
To work as a CNA, you must have a nurse aide certification. The most common way to get a nurse aide certification is to complete a training program and then challenge the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program exam. You will only receive your certification if you pass all the tests of the NNAAP exam.
To help you prepare for the NNAAP exam you need to attend a state-approved CNA training course. The training curriculum in California consists of a minimum of 50 hours of lectures and 100 hours of a practical training. Most of the courses in the state can be completed within 2 to 6 months of training. While in the program, you will be spending your instructional hours in classroom and skills training. You will then apply the procedures you learn in a clinical area like nursing homes to gain the practice you need for the job.
Your training will only be valid for 2 years after completing the course. This means that you must get certified within that time. If you fail to pass the NNAAP exam within 2 years after finishing the course, you will be required to undergo retraining. After the completion of the program and the other requirements like passing the background check, physical exam, and completing your application form, you can then take on the state exam.
Those who are enrolled in a facility-based training course are allowed to start working as nurse aides. This, of course, is only allowed if the facility accepts the responsibility and liability of the action of their students. Those who are enrolled in such courses are required to get certified within 120 days from the start of their work.
The examination will have a written multiple choice test and a skills demonstration part. You have to pass them both to get your license. Test takers are allowed three attempts to pass the tests for up to 24 months after finishing your training. Once you pass the competency examination, your name will then be entered in the state’s Nurse Aide Registry list. You can call the California Department of Public Health at 916-327-2445 to get more information about the state nurse aide registry and your eligibility.
California is open to certified nurse aides who are from other states. The state offers them reciprocity, which allows them to transfer and work without any need for further training or testing. To be eligible for reciprocity the applicant must have a valid certification and a clean record. He or she must not be listed on the Abuse Registry. To protect the interest of the patients, all applicants are still required to undergo and pass the national background checks for criminal records. For any questions, please visit the CDPH website at www.cdph.ca.gov or call (916) 327-2445.
