A CNA certification is required if you want to work as a nursing aide in California. If you have never been certified as a nursing aide before, then the only way for you to get certified is to pass the NNAAP exam. Before you take on the exam, you must first receive the proper training to establish your eligibility.
When looking for an NATP to enroll in, you must make sure that it is approved by the state’s Department of Public Health. An approved program consists of 150 hours of training. These hours are divided into lectures and supervised training by a qualified CNA instructor. In the entire course of the program, you will cover 16 modules which will include infection control, roles and responsibilities of a nursing aide, basic nursing care, personal care, communication and interpersonal skills, rights and independence of the patients, and many more.
If a person is currently a registered nurse, a licensed vocational nurse, or has military training as a medic or corpsman, he can apply for the NNAAP exam without any need to undergo additional training. Before applying, the applicant must submit proof of education and training to the Aide and Technician Certification Section. If proven eligible, the ATCS will provide the applicant information regarding the exams.
The NNAAP exam consists of a knowledge test and a clinical skills test. The knowledge test is normally offered in a written test, but candidates who have difficulty in reading may request to take an oral test instead. All 70 items in the knowledge test will be multiple-choice questions. As for the skills test, candidates will be given 30 minutes to perform 5 nursing skills in a given scenario in front of an evaluator. The first skill will always be hand washing while the rest will be randomly selected. You can view the complete list by following this link: http://www.asisvcs.com/publications/pdf/070500.pdf.
To get certified, you must pass both parts of the exam. You will only be given 3 attempts to pass. If you fail after the third test, you are required to retrain in a CDPH-approved NATP before you can reapply. When you reapply, you will only have to take the part that you failed and pay its corresponding fee.
CNA certificates in CA are valid for up to 24 months. You must keep it valid to remain eligible for work as a nursing aide. If you fail to renew your certification, you will no longer be allowed to continue to work as a nursing aide. You can however, reactivate your certification by passing an evaluation exam.
