The process of becoming a nurse aide can be exciting because of how quickly one can become trained and certified to work. Because of the high demand for workers in the profession, more and more people are looking for ways to become a nurse aide, but remember that even with the number of people now training to become CNAs there is still a shortage, making this an excellent entry level health care job.
The first step in becoming a nurse aide is to receive proper education and training. This can be achieved by enrolling in an NATP program that is certified by the Department of Public Health. Certified programs will offer you 150 hours of training. These hours are divided into 50 hours of lectures and 100 hours of practical training. Before you go to the clinical area for your practical training, you are going to spend 16 hours learning communication and interpersonal skills, infection control, safety and emergency protocols, promoting client’s independence, and respecting their rights.
By the time you complete your training, you would have covered the 16 different modules that were required by the CDPH to be taught to nurse aide candidates. You will also become eligible to apply for the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program exam or the NNAAP exam. This exam is conducted and scored by the Pearson VUE Testing Company. You can get an application packet by downloading one from www.pearsonvue.com. You will then send the forms as well as the payment of $90 to your local Regional Testing Center.
The NNAAP exam is an important step in becoming a nurse aide since it will be your only option to get certified as one. According to both federal and state regulations, you must be certified by the Aide and Technician Section of the L&C Program if you want to work as a CNA in California.
To get certified, you are required to pass both the knowledge test and the skills evaluation exam. Each candidate is given 3 attempts to pass. These attempts must also be used within 2 years of completing one’s training.
If there are no technical problems, the results of your exams will be sent within 10 minutes after they are sent for scoring. If you have any complaints about the exam, you are given the right to file for a grievance. The CDPH will then follow this complaint up within 30 days upon their receipt. If they find any faults, you will be allowed to retest for free.
If you pass all the tests, your name will be forwarded by Pearson VUE to the ATCS. You can expect your certificate to arrive at your address within 10 business days. If you do not receive this 30 days after you pass, please contact ATCS at (916) 327-2445 or (916) 492-8232.
