To be allowed to work as a nursing aide, you must have a CNA certification. This is only given to those whose names are entered on the Nurse Aide Registry. Those on the Registry were able to comply with the Federal and State training and testing regulations.
There are two ways to get on the Mississippi NAR. One option is by applying for reciprocity. This option however, is only available to those who were already able to take a state nursing aide license exam and are currently registered on a different state’s NAR. When they apply, they must not have records that prevent them from working as a nursing aide such as negligence, abuse, or misappropriation of a patient/resident’s property.
The second option is to challenge the state’s license examination. Before you are able take it, you will need to apply for it. When applying, you need to fill out the application form which you can get from the training course you enrolled in. You will also be required to submit proof of your training and the payment for the exam fees. The payment must be in the form of a money order to NACES. If you are able to pass all the tests, your name will be added to the Registry and you will receive your certification. At this time the reciprocity fee is $26.00 and the exam fee is $101.00. Applicants who chose to challenge the exams will have one opportunity to pass or be required to go back through a state approved training course.
CNA certification for this state lasts only for 2 years. You will need to renew it before it expires to be able to continue your eligibility to work. To renew your license, you must be able to work for at least 8 hours within that time. There is also an additional 12 hours of in-service for those who are working in a long-term care center. For further information about requirements you can contact a customer support official of the Mississippi State Department of Health by calling 601-364-1100.
